The materials sector covers mining companies, steel and aluminium producers, chemical and fertiliser makers, and producers of construction materials, paper and packaging.

Most of these businesses sell commodities, so prices for metals, chemicals and energy drive their earnings. Global industrial demand, especially from China, and the materials needed for electrification, such as copper and lithium, are major influences.
